What is the cost of living in Amsterdam? Former gallery owner Hans Gieles (69) receives €1,558 a month in state pension and lives in a social housing apartment on Westerdokseiland. Eight years ago he was sleeping in a night shelter, having lost his home after a divorce and a bout of depression. ‘It doesn’t matter that much how much money you have – peace of mind is what counts most.’
