A century ago, Amsterdam took over Schiphol with grand ambitions – now the city wants to clip the airport’s wings

Without Amsterdam and its residents, Schiphol would have long since vanished from its current location, and it certainly wouldn’t look the way it does today. The capital, which took charge of Schiphol exactly 100 years ago but now acts as an ‘activist shareholder’, stood firm time and again: hands off our airport.
