Sinds 1945 is er eigenlijk maar één grootmacht geweest in ons deel van Europa: Amerika. Economisch, militair en politiek waren de Amerikanen dominant in West-Europa. Na de val van de Muur en de ineenstorting van de Sovjet-Unie waren ze dat zelfs in heel Europa. Nu de Amerikanen zich terugtrekken van het continent, en soms ronduit vijandig doen, komt de oude vraag terug die in het verleden vaak tot oorlogen heeft geleid: wie is de machtigste op het continent?
