Proefschrift: The right of access to personal data in the EU

This dissertation investigates whether the right of access to personal data is effective in practice. To this end it studies legislative history and decisions by the European Court of Justice - as well as national courts and supervisory authorities. The study offers insights into how citizens, supervisory authorities, civil society and data protection officers experience the right of access to personal data in everyday practice. The introduction of the right of access to personal data has the aim of allowing people to defend their rights and interests. This aim is however only partially met - because of low levels of compliance by controllers and lenient enforcement by regulators.
