Amsterdam cultural sector groans under high accommodation costs: ‘Increasing tourist tax drives away the very people you want to attract’

Documentary festival Idfa is by no means the only cultural event caught in a bind due to rising tourist taxes and hotel VAT in Amsterdam. Major events like ADE and the Holland Festival, as well as cultural centers like De Balie – all of which bring in many guests from abroad – report that the increases are leading to higher ticket prices and leaner programming.
